Yeah, I've heard the "city" + "er" is common in in the German language to refer to things from that city (or place in general).  The word "hamburger" originally referred to Hamburg steaks, which were steaks made out of ground beef, and now of course "hamburger" is typically used in English to refer to what we know as the ground beef sandwich.
