I was in a drinking department with an IT problem several years back. Our IT 
department for a global gaming company (hint: Lara Croft) used to have 
quarterly department all-hands meetings in one of our office locations - we 
had offices in Paris, Hamburg, London and San Francisco.

When we went to Germany, most of the bars seemed to have one tap, or at 
least one "default" beer - the details are understandably fuzzy. When we'd 
order a round of drinks, we'd hold up 4 fingers and say (phonetic, as I 
don't want to look up high ascii) "vier grosse,bitte".

That was all the German I learned, as *everyone* I ran into spoke English.
