Changing the clock is one way to move more daylight hours to a more "useful" evening hour, during the longer summer days. It's not the only way, we could simply alter our schedule year round to follow the sun, but that seems harder for many people (and industries) than changing clocks to approximate this. For me, the biggest issue without DST would be the sun rising an hour earlier, local time, which means I would wake up earlier, and I'm in an environment where it's not so easy to convince others to wind down an hour earlier. End result is I'd lose an hour's sleep most nights (some nights, particularly in March would be less affected, as the sun starts to rise later), compared to having DST for that 6 months. ....
