I've been to Rio also, and at the main tourist area (Copacabana Beach), if
you go one block into the city from the shiny/fancy beachfront hotels and
restaurants/bars, you are engulfed in abject and utter poverty.  Probably
not even a block in most places.

It reminds me of the fake storefront facades in the Old West movie towns.
