I use both Discord and Matrix a lot, and I like them both.  Discord is a little
more polished and has a few extra fewatures, but Matrix still has a really good
feature set.  Matrix can also be bridged to just about anything through the use
of various bots (with puppet capability).  Bridges built with Matrix are pretty
transparent.

I'd recommend Matrix, because it has a good feature set, a choice of clients (I
use ELement), and is open source.
