Tool has a progressive element to their sound, similar to bands like Rush, Dream Theater, etc.  Tool's drummer Danny Carey has a very unique talent where he can play different tempos on each foot and arm.  (4) different time signatures at the same time.  That is super impressive.

I have always liked Megadeth, but like their slow evolution from speed metal to more thrash.  I was not really into speed metal - was more into thrash and groove metal.

Another band t-shirt I have that I wear is Gojira.  Can't forget about them, either.  They transformed from a death metal band to a progressive/groove metal band.  They also have an incredible drummer, Mario Duplantier.  The vocalist/guitarist and drummer are brothers and the band is from France.
