People have said it is metal for intelligent people, though I think that comment is in part people trying to present themselves as smarter because they like Tool.  Nevertheless, I think there is a degree of truth to that for the reasons you've mentioned.

I had preconceptions of what Megadeth and 80s Thrash Metal was like, but when I decided to delve into it a bit more (in part due to YouTuber "Shred") it was more engaging than I took it for.
