That was pretty much my experience with IRC as well, MP3s.  I'd go on to various IRC channels and interact with various bots to download songs.

Some had a ratio where I could download two songs for every one that I uploaded.  I remember one frustrating time where one this one bot had the song I wanted but everything I tried uploading was a duplicate.

That's when I raided my sister's room and used AudioGrabber to rip a few of her CDs so I could upload those.

At least back then you typically didn't have to worry about fake songs, though some of them were recorded off of the radio.  One Coldplay track I still listen to I half expect to hear the radio announcer talking over the end of the track as that MP3 off of IRC was where I first heard it.
