Maybe you should check the structure of Tiny Core Linux or KISS Linux. KISS
Linux is kind of special because it intends to be the most minimal, simple
system on which you can strap your own ports system and build arbitrary
packages to your liking. It has many knockoffs because its structure is so
simple it is very easy to create your custom version of the thing.
