The 80 minute CD's were targeted more for increased data.  I did use some for audio, and never recall any issues with CD players.  You were more likely to get a problem with CD players from cheap disks which had poor dye.

The 80 minute CD's basically had a tighter spiral, which was likely within the tolerance of what most, but possibly not the oldest, cd players could handle.

There were disks which were even longer, but then you'd be risking incompatibility problems.
