I had two monstrous 5 1/4" full-height 32mb Micropolis drives in my first 
incarnation of realitycheckBBS. The BBS was located in a walk-in 
closet/office of mine.

When the Fido mail run kicked off in the middle of the night, it'd wake me 
up, and then the chattering would sort of lull me back to sleep.

Agreed about the modem relays, even with the volume turned off I'd 
conditioned myself to recognize the sound from across the apartment.
