I think it related to my heartbeat.  I suspect I have what is known as "Somatic Tinnutus", a version of tinnutus caused by the body, rather than in the ears itself.  Can explain why pressure on the ears can cause it to get louder.

Do you find that occasionally, off a sudden, the tinnutus for seemingly no reason gets a LOT louder, then gradually quietens back to its usual volume?
