I've had tinitus since at least I was a teenager.  Not really sure how I got it or when I really noticed it, but since then I've always slept with a fan on.

If the fan turns off for whatever reason (power outage, someone switches it off, etc) I find the silence quite unsettling, not to mention annoying because of the high pitch whistle always present in my ears.
