I bought a domain a long time ago, and have either had that email hosted 
somewhere or forwarded the email to another provider. That gives you the 
ability to change providers without changing email addresses nicely.

For 6 bucks a month, I get email, unlimited web domains, a couple of gigs of 
storage and a LAMP stack on a shared host. It's worked well for the past 10 
years or so.
