They are an old example, but there are offline readers that can archive the
contents of multiple offline packets into a Squish or JAM messagebase, which
can give close to the best of both worlds.

There is the Tapatalk mobile client for online web forums, but it suffers from
being only an online client.  Navigation is nice from memory, but does nothing
for the poor performance.  Tapatalk does require server side support to be
installed on the server, but that's analagous to installing an offline mail
(QWK or Bluewave) door on older BBSs.
