I found 'git gui' too just before I read your mail. I didn't expect much from a Tk app, but it works for me too. Simple to understand and very lightweight. I have the impression the older the GUI libs are, the better they work with X11 remote display. I also download lazygit, a Go TUI program with mouse support. Looks good too.
