Basically to find and color the quoted text (and tear/origin lines) differently from the reply text. Which really makes things easier to read if you ask me. I'm not sure I've convinced him yet. He has some concern around handling the display of real ANSI (like BBS ads) without trying to colorize them if a > is detected.
