I was thinking of trying one of them under OS/2 with VMODEM, or maybe with
linux/dosemu/xinet, to see if it'd work.

LOL, my first experience with fidonet was similar.  GT Power BBS did not
have native FTN support but there was a 3rd party program that would
import/export *.msg files into/out of the GT Power bases.
