My personal experience from back then is that 1. There were more females involved in bbsing then there are now. 2. There was a more diverse age range then there is now.
So on my BBS back then I had a female co-sysop and she moderated a message area that was for females only. If you answered the questions correctly and were a female you got access to that area by it setting the proper flag. Also was in an adult (18+) message network so if you answered the age question correctly you had access to those areas. So there were some valid reasons for those questions back then.
