I'm trying to recall what I was doing in 1994..

I was operating my 1st Fidonet BBS:

 "Vis … Vis Communications", from an apartment in Quebec.

I was also using Compuserve and its automated way to dial in,  
gather the messages that I wanted to read offline, and send  
back my replies. I managed to reduce my weekly expense to only  
$30.  :D  :/   ..but even that was probably too much.

There were other automated tools for calling local BBS,  
gathering the QWK packets and reading them offline too.

I was an early adopter of automated means, conferences, and  
echomail.

The automated way of Frontdoor/APX was an alleluia moment.  Did  
you ever give Frontdoor a go?
