This happens when the editor is using a non-monospaced font. Fonts that work are
(among others) in particular "Lucida Console" and "Courier New". Still, WP
should default to "Lucida Console" ...

Besides the classic way (writing to AreaFix), you may use the inbuilt Echo Area
Manager. However, that one is (almost the last place in the application that is)
still german in your version. Still, I already localized that one, so in the
next release the area manager is available in english as well and also has some
minor improvements.
