Concerning...Heavy rainfall...Flash flooding possible

SUMMARY...Heavy showers and thunderstorms advancing across areas
of western and northern GA early this morning may produce an
isolated concern for flash flooding. This will include the Atlanta
metropolitan area.

DISCUSSION...The latest radar imagery shows a broken areas of
heavy showers and thunderstorms crossing through portions of
western and northern GA as warm air advection increases over the
region ahead of an upper-level low and associated trough entering
the Mid-South. The eastward advance of moisture and elevated
instability into the region from the west will likely sustain a
threat of locally heavy shower and thunderstorm activity over the
next few hours.

Rainfall rates with the ongoing activity to the southwest of the
Atlanta metropolitan area have been tending to increase somewhat
over the last hour, and there has been some cooling convective
cloud tops associated with this.

Over the next 2 to 3 hours, broken areas of heavy shower and
thunderstorm activity will continue to cross areas of western and
northern GA. Some of the rainfall rates should reach and locally
exceed 1.5 inches/hour, and some spotty storm totals of 2 to 3
inches will be possible. This may drive some urban flash flooding
concerns, including the Atlanta metropolitan area and adjacent
suburbs.
