A mid-level short-wave trough just off the California coast, embedded in the broader cyclonic flow field over the West, will dig southeastward across southern California later tonight. As this occurs, showers -- and a few embedded thunderstorms -- will evolve/increase across portions of the area overnight. Farther east, a band of showers extending from the Lower Great Lakes area southwestward to the Tennessee Valley continue shifting eastward, ahead of an upper Midwest mid-level cyclone. Occasional/embedded lightning flashes continue across the Tennessee Valley area, and may persist locally this evening.
