Concerning...Snow Squall=20

SUMMARY...Snow squalls are expected to linger through early
afternoon across portions of southeast Kansas, northeast Oklahoma,
northwest Arkansas, and southwest Missouri as a snow band pushes
east/southeast.

DISCUSSION...Recent surface observations across southeast KS and
northeast OK show periodic blizzard conditions associated with a
persistent mesoscale snow band evident in regional radar mosaics.
This band is primarily being driven by weak frontogenesis within the
850-700 mb layer combined with broad ascent within the left-exit
region of a strong upper-level jet nosing into the southern Plains.
Recent forecast guidance suggests this band will continue to push
east/southeast through early afternoon as the upper jet moves east.
Rapid cooling and saturation within the -12 to -17 C layer behind
the initial frontal passage will result in a ~100 mb DGZ favorable
for maintenance of moderate snowfall rates within the snow band.
Additionally, strong cold advection within the lowest 1 km will
allow for efficient mixing of 35-45 knots winds coincident with
moderate snowfall rates. This combination of moderate snowfall and
strong, gusty winds will result in periodic blizzard conditions with
visibility reductions to 1/4 mile possible. Snow squall potential
will be highest along the I-44 corridor from northeast OK into
southwest MO, but snow squall conditions may develop as far south as
the I-40 corridor in eastern OK over the next 2-4 hours.
