SUMMARY...The potential for heavy snowfall rates above 1-2 inches
per hour will increase through the late afternoon and early evening
hours for portions of northern Idaho and northwest Montana.

DISCUSSION...Recent radar and satellite imagery have shown an
increase in reflectivity and cloud cover over eastern WA, northern
ID, and western MT over the past few hours. This is likely
attributable to strengthening warm advection near the 700 mb layer
as a weak upper-level disturbance translates across the Pacific
Northwest. Recent surface observations have shown an uptick in snow
intensity with moderate to heavy snow being reported at times across
eastern WA and northern ID, which supports noted radar/satellite
trends. Forecast soundings suggest lift will be maximized within the
dendritic growth zone for the next 3-5 hours across the region,
which will maintain the potential for moderate to heavy snow. While
the potential for an organized snow band appears low, snowfall rates
exceeding 1-2 inch/hour are probable along the ID/MT border where
orographic ascent will bolster synoptic lift and favor more
efficient snow production.
