SUMMARY...Snow rates of 3+ inches per hour will become increasingly
possible later this afternoon into the evening, accompanied by
locally strong wind gusts.

DISCUSSION...In advance of an amplified mid/upper-level trough off
of the Pacific Northwest coast, anomalously moist deep-layer
southwesterly flow is resulting in an expanding plume of
precipitation across parts of central/northern California.
Large-scale ascent combined with very favorable upslope flow will
support a long duration of heavy precipitation rates across the
Sierra Range. Within the initial warm-air advection regime, snow
levels will be higher and snow-to-liquid ratios will be lower, but
wet snow rates of 2-3 inches/hour will be possible at higher
elevations. Later this afternoon into the evening, snow levels will
lower from north to south as a cold front moves inland, with
increasing snow-to-liquid ratios supporting snow rates of 3-5 inches
per hour as favorable deep-layer moist southwesterly flow is
maintained across the region.=20=20

In addition to the heavy snow rates, 700 mb flow of 50-60 kt
impinging upon the higher terrain will support strong wind gusts,
resulting in very difficult to impossible travel conditions across
the region through tonight.
