SUMMARY...A loosely organized snow band developing over southwest to
central Montana may produced periods of reduced visibility and heavy
snowfall rates up to 1-2 inches per hour through the remainder of
the evening.

DISCUSSION...Latest regional reflectivity trends show a loosely
organized snow band developing across southwest to central Montana
over the past 60 minutes. This band is largely being driven by
broad-scale ascent ahead of an approaching upper wave overlaid with
strong mesoscale lift in the form of frontogenesis in the 850-700 mb
layer along/ahead of a southeastward surging cold front. Latest RAP
forecast soundings from central MT suggest that the strongest ascent
may be coincidental with the dentritic growth zone, favoring heavy
snowfall rates. Recent surface observations under this band show
areas of reduced visibility down to 1/4 mile. Weak winds noted
across much of the region (outside of far southern MT, which is in a
downslope wind regime) suggest that these reduced visibilities are
due to heavy snowfall rather than a combination of falling/blowing
snow. This band of moderate to heavy snow should continue to shift
to the southeast through the evening in tandem with the cold front.
