Isolated lightning strikes will be possible today across the lower Great Lakes associated with lake-effect snowbands. A few thunderstorms could also develop across south Florida. Elsewhere, thunderstorms are not expected today or tonight. ....DISCUSSION... A large-scale troughing pattern will be in place across the eastern two-thirds of the continental United States today. An upper-level trough will move across the Mississippi Valley, as mid-level flow remains from the west-southwest across the Gulf Coast region. At the surface, a high pressure area will remain anchored across much of the central and eastern states. This will keep a dry and cool airmass in place over much of the continental United States. A few thunderstorms could occur across south Florida. Lightning strikes are also possible in the lower Great Lakes in association with lake-effect snowbands.
