Subj : Greetings... To : ARDITH HINTON From : Daryl Stout Date : Mon Dec 29 2014 17:04:37 Hi, Ardith... Hope you and yours had a good Christmas. It has been busy for me, medical wise. I had a double ended (front and back) procedure just before Christmas. They did a cystoscopy up through the penis and urethra to look into the bladder, and took an image of the prostate through the rectum. Naturally, I was asleep for both. :) But, I'm a prime candidate for this new prostate relief procedure called Urolift...and I never thought I'd be so excited about a surgical procedure. Enlarged prostate issues are part of males growing old, but this procedure has "given life back" to so many of those having it done. What they do is, via outpatient surgery, put the patient to sleep (obviously). Then, a device is inserted through the penis and urethra, to where the prostate is. Then "clips" (sort of like you put on window blinds) are put on each side of the prostate to pull it back, to where it's not constricting the flow of urine out of the bladder. The procedure takes an hour or two to complete, depending if they need to put 1 or 2 clips on each side of the prostate. It's minimally invasive, plus there is no catheter needed afterwards, no overnight hospital stay. While the patient is given pain medication, relief can be seen in as little as 2 weeks. There is also no loss of sexual function (i.e. E.D.). Also, there is NO CUTTING or BURNING of ANY prostate tissue. For those who are interested, they can go to: http://www.uroliftforbph.com I have a follow-up with the urologist in late January, but the procedure likely won't be done until February. But, from what I've read, this is an excellent option, and will likely mean I can stop taking Flomax (Tamulosin).
