For the moment it's fairly clear I don't understand. The only hint so far is an error message from journalctl -g wlan0 saying " association took too long ". At that point the Pi5 appears to start scanning 5 GHz access points, despite being told otherwise in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf . That looks to me like a software problem.
