IHMO: I think this was planned.

Choice: Get a 4 year education and a BS, and start at $50,000 in a corporate
job - and in 10 years be at $100,000.
or
Get a 4 year education for a BS, plus another 2 years for an MS, then do
student teaching (I don't know how much they get paid for this - if anything),
to start at $25,000 - and in 10 years be at $50,000.

So the only people who go into teaching are the ones that are truely dedicated
to teaching (and get burned out and leave) and the morons.

I remember my dad being pissed because he wanted out of the teacher's union. 
They made it extremely hard.
1. You could only opt out over like a 2 week window, not during the school
year.2. They **still** took money out of your paycheck because "we do
collective
bargaining on your behalf".
