I thought so.  I understand what a "hate crime" is, and am not bothered
that it is used as an "accessory charge" to make it more likely a criminal
does their time.  In this case, though, it feels like it is being used in a
way that says the murders they committed are somehow "more important" than
the ones whose assailants were commutted.

Yeah, that makes sense.  The summaries used on TV and other places lacked a
lot of details.  I know a couple of them were murders who then murdered
prison guards (or other staff) while in prison.
