IIRC, they also screened them for diseases.  There was an
infirmary/sanitarium they were kept in until they got better.  Also, at
some point during the 1930s or 1940s they were turning some people away if
they had certain potentially contageous diseases.

I may be under the false impression that they could also control the number
of immigrants allowed in.  During at least WWII (maybe or maybe not
before), they could and did decline entry to persons who didn't have papers
to prove who they were and where they were from.

I would like to see them go back to something similar to the "Ellis Island
days" described above... you need ID, you need to be vetted for diseases,
the numbers can be controlled... but anything more organized than now would
be an improvement.

I have friends who have immigrated legally.  I don't know if it bothers
them that much, but it bothers me to no end that they have so many hoops to
jump through doing it the legal way, while others seem to be able to do it
much easier by just showing up at the southern border and saying "asylum"
with little proof of who they are or where they came from.
