Impeachment and removal are technically two different things in the US. You can be impeached (by the House) without being removed (by the Senate). Removal is reserved for "treason, bribery," and other "high crimes," so an impeachment resulting in removal from office does require a crime to have been comitted. Trump's criminal conviction, regarding his finances, was indeed separate from either of his impeachments.
