Politicians who are trying to keep both sides of a debate happy try to go down the middle of the road and, as you point out, wind up fumbling to both sides. Also, when I got to explain it, I get to sit behind a keyboard and can also look stuff up before I type it. I can also read it multiple times before hitting send.
