And that's something that I never quite understood.

Companies are created to make money for their owners.  They hire, at great
expense, a CEO to manage the company and make money.  The CEO becomes woke and
runs the company into the ground.  Who benefits?  Certainly not the CEO (unless
other money has changed hands behind the scenes) since his pay is usually tied
to the financial success of the company.
