I still waiting for these statistics, (as well as learning of their origins) but most statistics are based on facts and a back-story that explains why these findings are so. 

Are people struggling? - Yes of course that are, due to everyday needs
being more and more expensive.  Income is not keeping up with the cost.

The Dollar does have the same purchasing power then it once did, more and more money is required to purchase the same amount of goods then before.
