In some places, it does not pay to invest too much into an opposition
candidate when you know whoever it is will have very little chance because
they are Republican (or, in some cases, Democrat).

But if he spent time talking about all that stuff, wouldn't he risk loosing
the support of Republican/conservative voters?  My guess is that he'd be
outed as a "RINO" and MAGA Republican voters would avoid him.

Our political spectrum has become too divided.  Most die-hard D or R folks
don't like a candidate who is moderate or would try to make any
compromises.  So they have to ignore the other side (and Independents) and
preach to their own choir.  If they are in an area where the bigger choir
is the other side's, they have probably already lost.

I don't understand it either.  Is there some context behind it?

I really don't think color or sex or lack of hair matters so long as you
are promissing those things... and, in the case of NYC, you are a D.
