That was pretty much my experience as well.

They white-washed the early history ("Lies My Teachers Told Me" was very eye
opening) but as you got closer to current history, it was usually ignored.  At
the time, I thought it was due to the fact that the school hadn't updated their
textbooks in a while.

I think the most controversial, and most "current event", was debating whether
we should have dropped the bomb on Japan.  But that was nearly 40 years old by
the time I was in High School.


.... Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular.
