In this case, the "you" in question did not change the rules.  Alan is a
left-leaner, for sure, but he is not a registered (American) Democrat
because he is Canadian.  He likes to complain about US politics and US
Republicans but any attempt to engage him in discussions about the politics
of his own country will usually be ignored or deflected.
