I'm seeing that on a personal level right now.

I have a nephew who "came out" and is now in a deep depression.

Keep in mind that the whole family supported him.  None of this "I'll not have
a gay <relative>!" ranting from anyone.

Now that he's older, the natural BS detector is kicking in and he's questioning
his reality - and he's not liking the answers that he's coming up with as they
are shaking his whole self.
