During WW I, which started roughly 50 years after slavery was outlawed in the US, the war spilled out from Europe and into the African colonies as the European leaders hoped to use the conflict to gain more territory. While France apparently treated most of their colonial subjects as well as their citizens, the same cannot be said for the UK and Germany. Many of the subjects were conscripted into the armed forces before conscription was mandatory in other parts of the empires, and were not treated as equals. The German colonial military officers, in particular, were known not to spare the whip when it came time to motivate their subjects into defending their colonies from the French and British.
