Subj : Cancel Culture To : All From : Jeff Thiele Date : Thu Oct 27 2022 11:14:55 At an October 3 fashion show in Paris, Kanye (or "Ye") West had models wearing "White Lives Matter," a known white supremacist slogan, walk down the runway. When Sean "Diddy" Combs said that he "did not rock" with the WLM movement, West responded, "Ima use you as an example to show the Jewish people that told you to call me that no one can threaten or influence." This statement got West kicked off of Instagram. West then posted on Twitter (where he hadn't posted for two years): "I'm a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I'm going death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE" (original emphasis). This got him kicked off of Twitter. West then appeared on a hip-hop community podcast where, in addition to falsely claiming that George Floyd died of a fentanyl overdose rather than police brutality) he said, "I can say anti-Semetic things, and Adidas can't drop me. Now what? Now what?" Adidas dropped West on October 25, and a number of other companies including the GAP and Foot Locker followed suit. The talent agency CAA has dropped West as a client, the Hollywood production company MRC has shelved a recently-completed ducumntary about West, Vogue magazine has acted to distance itself from West, and lawyer Camille Vasquez has dropped him as a client. Balenciaga, the fashion brand that West represented at the Paris fashion show, announced that they will no longer be working with West. Fox News has also suspended support for West. After being kicked off of Instagram and Twitter, West made moves to buy Parler. West has claimed that he lost $2 billion in one day as a result of the controlversy. He no longer holds billionaire status, according to Forbes. Was West a victim of Cancel Culture, or were all of those companies breaking ties with him a natural consequence of his anti-Semitic speech?
