From their point of view, progressive attempts to foster equality for Americans who aren't white are seen as giving special rights to non-white Americans and taking rights, or exclusive access to specific rights, away from white Americans. The Republican party plays into that delusion every chance that they get; in fact, that was the basis of the "Southern Strategy" in the mid-20th century. Gregory, for example, once took offense at the idea of a purple mannequin wearing a BLM t-shirt. I can only guess that it was offensive to him because in his worldview, people of one color should only care about other people of that same color, and purple people showing support for black people was inconceivable.
