Perhaps those concerns would be better addressed by examining the safety
issues inherent to the sporting event and altering the rules accordingly.

Do factories, mines, and the like simply pray for worker safety before each
workday, or are they required to address known safety issues? 

Relying on supernatural protection for worker/player is a shirking of
responsibility.
