It is often said there are no atheists in foxholes. Kurt Vonnegut,
whom I met years ago at LSU at a lecture, said he was an atheist in
a foxhole, and survived. His novel "Slaughterhouse Five" is quite
telling, and few realize he was a survivor of the bombing of Dresden.
