This individual can pray privately all he likes, but that's not what he was
doing. He was inviting/encouraging others to join him, potentially putting
pressure on others who didn't share his beliefs to join him in his public
exercise of his religion, lest they be left out and excluded from team
activities. And he didn't do this privately; he did it in front of everyone.
Everyone could see who was included and who was excluded, based almost
exclusively on their religion, or lack thereof.
