Voters. G. H. W. Bush's political career was very young, and having his party in his state suddenly taken over by former Democrat voters was a hurdle to his political future. > I'm confused; was there a time when > Democrats were the ones trying to help the American people? And when they > found out they were lied to, then they switched to Republican? No, Texas Democrats were upset because LBJ, who was also a Texan, was turning his back on the "Dixiecrats" by supporting social policies like the Civil Rights movement. So, they got upset and switched parties. Since the Republican Party was the only serious alternative (i.e. the only other party likely to win elections) that is where they landed. In other states, I think the Democrat party may have split and given rise to some briefly-lived third parties for the Dixiecrats to turn to. So Jeff-T's claims, when made against the backdrop of 1960's Texas politics, are based on true events. * SLMR 2.1a * Maybe I should cut the power before I-- ZZZAAPPOWWWWWW --- SBBSecho 3.14-Linux * Origin: capitolcityonline.net * Telnet/SSH:2022/HTTP (1:2320/105) .
