The root of that term dates back to the French Revolution in 1789, when members of the National Assembly were seated according to their support for the monarchy; supporters of the king -- those in favor of maintaining the status quo -- were seated to the right of the president, and those in favor of revolution -- those who demanded change -- were seated to the president's left.
