The changes.txt mentions:

        Bugs fixed:

        - Turning off text highlighting did not work if message reader was
          in UTF-8 mode


I have configured 5.0.40 (Win) to use UTF-8 and toggling highlighting  
seems to work OK.  Could that have been just a linux-version thing?
